Language Arts 09 (ninth grade)
Selections from classic and modern literature are read for enjoyment and for understanding. Author's statements and assumptions are analyzed in comparison to the principles of the Word of God. The play Cyrano de Bergerac is used as to analyze how all the elements of literature contribute to a work's moral tone. Grammar studies emphasize the components of correct written expression. Vocabulary study uses roots and prefixes to increase word study skills as well as to learn new words. Composition involves paragraph development, unity, and coherence, and short essays.
Language Arts 10 (tenth grade)
Tenth grade language arts uses many varieties of literature to explore how writers convey meaning indirectly through metaphor, allusion, and other literary devices. Each section of secular literature is introduced with selections from the Bible which use the literary device under study. Developing these analytical reading skills, in turn, further helps the student to read the Bible for understanding. The major work studied is William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Composition, grammar, and vocabulary studies continue to develop skills for clear, correct, and effective written communication. Composition focuses on creative writing and research writing.
Language Arts 11 (junior year)
The survey of American literature, from the founding of Jamestown to modern times, emphasizes the biblical foundations of America. Major works of each era are analyzed for the authors' viewpoints and philosophies, with the Bible being the standard of truth. Students develop a familiarity with the cultural heritage of American literature. The major work read is the play Our Town, with an essay written in response. Composition and grammar skills are further developed with an emphasis on clear, concise, and correct writing. Major compositions deal with career research and the logic of persuasive writing.
Language Arts 12 (senior year)
This survey of British literature covers 1500 years of historical and philosophical development. Emphasis is placed on the landmark works of each era: those that are well known and those that have shaped the development of thought affecting the modern era. Students compare one era to the next and compare all to the unchanging standard of God's truth. Persuasive writing is further developed, and the college preparatory sequence of composition is completed with a research-based thesis, proving the viewpoint, and written with MLA documentation form.
