| 10/29-30 MCAA Tournament - Tri-City lost a closely contested match Thursday, 10/29, against Faith Christian, 2-0. The match was played in a driving rainstorm that severely affected play. The Crusaders manufactured a handful of scoring opportunities, but were unable to cash in. Shane Vogel and Luke Hermann teamed to play solid defense and Jon Sheeley played well in the goal.
On Friday, Tri-City evened its season series with Eagle Heights by pulling out a thrilling 2-1 victory. Tri-City opened the scoring at the 10 minute mark when Matt Sheeley's shot took a defensive deflection to beat the keeper. Eagle Heights equalized twenty minutes later, again, off a defensive deflection. Despite several Eagle Heights attacks, the scoreline remained even at halftime, 1-1. The second half began much like the first ended with the Eagles controlling play and creating multiple scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize. Within the final minute of the match, however, Tri-City earned a corner. On Jacob Logan's cross, Tommy Farrell (welcome back, Tommy, from injury) flicked on a header, narrowly beating the keeper to the ball. With the keeper out of goal, Luke Hermann calmly finished to give the Crusaders the 2-1 victory. Luke won Man of the Match honors not only for his game-winner, but also for stellar defensive play that kept Tri-City in position to snatch victory in the closing minutes. |
10/16 @ Eagle Heights - The Crusaders lost a closely contested match Friday night, but not for lack of effort. Tri-City fell behind early when the Eagles capitalized on a penalty kick and later on a cross that TC's keeper was unable to corral. The Crusaders, however, came back strong in the second half. Ben Rippee connected with Jacob Logan in the 51st minute to draw the Crusaders within one. Tri-City's pressure mounted throughout the second half, but the Crusaders were unable to find an equalizer. The Eagles sealed the victory with just five minutes remaining to make the score 3-1.
10/12 vs. Shawnee Mission - The Crusaders recorded a quality win on Monday night with a 2-0 shutout over the Shawnee Mission Mustangs. Tri-City opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Kyle McCulley scored off a Jacob Logan cross. In the second half, Jacob again got into the scorebook, this time by finishing a well-played through pass by Matt Sheeley. Man of the Match honors were shared by Luke Hermann and Jon Sheeley, whose defensive efforts secured TC's second clean sheet of the season. Special thanks to Shawnee Mission for rescheduling the match on such short notice.
10/2 @ Berean - Tri-City fought well during a wind-swept game in Olathe on Friday night. Luke Hermann held a strong defensive line as the Crusaders fell to an athletic Berean side. Kyle McCulley played a determined second half as did Matt Shelley.
10/6 @ Cornerstone - The Crusaders struggled offensively on Tuesday night, though Kyle McCulley and Jacob Logan were able to create several second half opportunities. Coaches Baker and Macht were encouraged, however, by the development of Isaac Curtis at Left-back and Luke Hermann at the Center-back. Cornerstone fielded an extremely competitive squad and played well throughout.</p>
9/24 vs. Whitefield - The Crusaders nearly scored first when Jacob Logan was taken down just outside the 18 and Kyle McCulley grazed the post with the resulting free kick. The Crusaders defense, somewhat crippled by injuries, played courageously in the loss and adjusted well to the new defensive tactics. Coaches Baker and Gray were encouraged by the performance against a solid Whitefield side.
9/29 at Shawnee Mission - The Crusaders scored just five minutes in when Kyle McCulley vollied in a flick-on header from Matt Sheeley off a Jacob Logan corner. Shawnee Mission answered with two goals of their own in the 24th and 31st minutes. But then Tri-City scored four unanswered, which included three from Kyle (33', 42, and 51) and another from Jacob (39). Jacob closed out the scoring with two more goals, one assisted by Shane Vogel in the 65th minute and another from Matt Sheeley in the 67th. It was a solid performance from the Crusaders as Kyle McCulley won Man of the Match honors for his four goal effort.
Maranatha Tournament - The Crusaders' young squad is improving nearly every game and saw some quality play during the Maranatha tournament. Even with three losses, Tri-City captured their first win of the year over Faith Christian (LaFayette, IN). The match ended in a 0-0 draw and had to be settled via penalty kick shootout. Jacob Logan, Jon Sheely, Tommy Farrell, and Matt Sheely all capitalized from the spot and Jon Sheely (GK) denied Faith twice. Tommy Farrell not only earned Man of the Match honors, but was selected to the All-Tournament team.
9/15 vs. Blue Ridge - Tri-City came out strong and netted a goal inside the two minute mark when Jacob Logan slotted a perfectly placed through-ball by Luke Hermann. Luke and Jacob hooked up again just five minutes later, but Jacob narrowly missed giving the Crusaders an early two goal lead. Blue Ridge drew even at the twenty minute mark and the game went to half tied. Even though the Crusaders hung tough for nearly twenty-five minutes of the second half, the defense allowed three goals in the final fifteen minutes. Coaches Baker and Gray were greatly encouraged with the effort, however. The first half was by far the best stretch of soccer TC played so far this year. They hope to build on that effort as they head off later this week to the Maranatha soccer tournament.
